So I’ve attended a couple of atheist conventions/conferences and both the ones I’ve attended (TFC’12 and AACON’13) had speakers on the issue of Atheism+ and related ideologies, and what I noticed were that it’s backers are either A.) well off, white male, academia or B.) Militant feminist, they call atheism a “boys club” and that they’re trying to root out unsavory ideas from the pot, but what I suspect is happening isn’t what they want you to think.
What I believe is going on is, atheism has in the past been a very small group, it has historically been a position tied in with leftist political philosophy and the scarlet letter of the academic world that they wore with pride. More recently atheism has grown, previous groups that had been only religious or just didn’t associate with atheism are now joining ranks. It’s jumped from the moneyed elite to the working class and they’re scared.
New demographics like minorities and whites with lower socio-economic status are joining and a lot of times they have little in common with the high-society, womyns studies professors. What they do have in common, a disbelief in a deity, isn’t enough for the entrenched establishment to associate with the plebs, so they create a movement centered around “enlightening” the unwashed masses. They take the common disbelief in a deity PLUS their token issues (feminism, gun control, environmentalism, appeasement of white guilt, social justice) and voila we can make atheism the good ol’ atheism it was in the good ol’ days back before these outsiders co-opted it for just *shudder* separation of church and state and protecting the civil liberties of atheists.
